So, it seems like SpongeBob needs to end. If this happened, nickelodeon could do one of three things: remove the characters (which would make the show feel really empty), replace the actors (which would be difficult because no one would sound quite as iconic as the current actors), or piece together clips to make an AI dialogue (which, let's be honest, won't sound good). So, if SpongeBob were to go on for 20 or even 10 more years, these actors may pass away. But there's a problem: they're all in their 50s-70s. All the SpongeBob actors are perfect for their roles, and they still perform them well. The town of bikini bottom has lost its thunder.īut then there's the actors. And while some newer SpongeBob episodes are actually decent (like "Shell Games" in season 12), the humor just isn't what it was. Then SpongeBob replaces the moon and says Santa will bring a new one in December. Why not?īasically Santa calls SpongeBob a menace and then I can't remember how but the moon disappears. There's some dumb jokes and Squidward goes to the dark side of the moon, only to discover. But Squidward of course doesn't have one, so he gets super gross and contorted and says "oh no not puberty again." Honestly this was one of the few funny parts of the episode.Ī few bad puns and jokes later, they arrive on the moon. One of these was the radiation belt, where they all had to hide underneath lead blankets. On the way to the moon they come across a bunch of belts with weird effects, and Squidward has no protection from these because he's in the cargo hold. Turns out Squidward's accidentally stowing away on the rocket, and he's pretty much only there so Nick can squeeze more money out of the memes that they think will be made when they abuse this squid in every way possible but actually won't. also SpongeBob is wearing a kilt for some reason. THIS IS TOTALLY NOT SIMILAR TO A LITERAL SEASON 1 EPISODE. In this episode, we have SpongeBob, Sandy, Pearl and some random squid lady who I'm pretty sure never appeared before this episode but they're all acting like she's a regular character are all going to the moon. A good example of this is Goons on the Moon in season 11. Now not only are the plots starting to mimic or bring back super old characters, but they're extremely random and the endings make no sense. In older SpongeBob episodes, every episode had a drastically different plot, but each also had one coherent story. Which is funny, because all the SpongeBob memes you'll find are from moments in the show prior to when the animators tried to do this. It's too vibrant, and everything is trying to become a meme. The animation has progressively gotten worse in my opinion. My favorite era of SpongeBob animation is probably seasons 3-4, and the first movie, of course. But the thing is, it's not the same anymore, and many people don't like this.įirst there's the animation. Its popularity is still alive and well and it seems as though it will stay that way. It's changed, and at the moment I'm worried it's for the worse.Īt the moment, SpongeBob isn't struggling. Or at least, still being well-likedīut, SpongeBob, unfortunately, just isn't the same anymore. In fact, it's pretty much the only show that people consider "retro nickelodeon" that's still going. What's even more interesting is the fact that people who grew up watching SpongeBob now have kids watching SpongeBob. I watched the first Movie recently, and I loved it. While there is no overarching story, each individual episode has an interesting plot. The episodes are surprisingly enjoyable even now. But for reasons I can't explain, I started getting back into the show and was hit with nostalgia. Heck, they didn't seem important at the time. One slipper is yellow with SpongeBob's face and a pineapple pattern inside, and one is pink with Patrick's face and the pattern of his trunks inside. On Christmas of 2020, I got a present that brought me back into SpongeBob: A pair of slippers. But something did bring me back a couple years ago. I still watched an episode or two every now and then, and I even watched the Big Birthday Blowout (aka the 20th anniversary special), and this cartoon still held a special place in my heart, but I didn't get invested in it for a long time. But anyway, I (sort of) grew up, moved on, and enjoyed other things. Yeah, I wasn't super mature and I still am not. Naturally, I grew out of it and moved on to slightly more mature shows. I drew pictures of SpongeBob, wore SpongeBob shirts, watched it whenever it came on. It just keeps growing.Īnd SpongeBob means a lot to me. We've got 13 seasons, 3 movies, 4 series, tons of merchandise, a Musical, books, memes, games. And at the moment, it seems like this cartoon will never end. He's up there with Mickey Mouse and Buggs Bunny. SpongeBob SquarePants is subjectively one of the most iconic cartoon characters ever. WARNING: Contains spoilers for SpongeBob and Drake and Josh
